SALINAS, Calif. — A tragic incident unfolded in East Salinas on Friday afternoon when a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed, leading local high schools to impose brief lockdowns as a precautionary measure. Salinas police reported that officers were called to the area near 1200 Camarillo Court shortly after 3:30 p.m. in response to a ShotSpotter alert.
Upon arrival, authorities found the teenager suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene, marking the seventh homicide in Salinas this year. While police have opened an investigation, there was no immediate threat to the community, and further details about potential suspects have not yet been released.
In light of the shooting, Alisal High School enacted a short lockdown protocol, which also extended to Cesar E. Chavez Elementary School. School officials stated that these measures were taken out of an abundance of caution due to the off-campus incident. The lockdown began at approximately 3:55 p.m. and was lifted shortly thereafter, as law enforcement assessed the situation.
Throughout the lockdown, school personnel ensured the safety of students and staff, with no direct threat to campus security. In a communication sent to families, officials emphasized their adherence to safety protocols, stating that students remained sheltered in their classrooms until it was safe to resume normal operations.
