COLUMBIA, Md. — A recent surge of violence near the Mall in Columbia has claimed the lives of two teenagers, intensifying ongoing concerns about safety in the area. Authorities confirmed that 16-year-old Michael Robertson and 15-year-old Blake McCray both succumbed to injuries sustained in a targeted shooting incident.
An 18-year-old, Emmetson Zeah, has been arrested and charged with the murders following the incident, which occurred close to a local Lidl supermarket on Little Patuxent Parkway. According to Howard County Police, Zeah allegedly attacked the two teens in an assault that investigative leads suggest was premeditated, though a motive has not been disclosed.
Detective insights reveal that during an interrogation, Zeah admitted to executing the shootout that ended the young lives of Robertson and McCray. This confession has brought some closure to the case, although community unease persists.
In a broader context, this episode aligns with Zeah’s history of violence. He was previously implicated in a separate altercation on Valentine’s Day along Twin Rivers Road, where he allegedly missed his target while discharging multiple shots. Zeah claimed he was responding to being shot at in this earlier incident, a claim that police investigations have not corroborated with evidence of the alleged aggressor possessing a firearm.
Evidence including GPS data and mall security footage played a pivotal role in Zeah’s apprehension. Additionally, a witness positively identified him as the shooter, further solidifying law enforcement’s case against him.
This shooting is the second fatal incident near the mall in less than 12 months. Previously, a teenager was killed inside the mall’s food court area, an event which triggered a widespread manhunt for the perpetrator.
In response to escalating violence, Howard County police have initiated an enhanced security strategy aimed at bolstering public safety around the mall precinct. Police Chief Gregory Der outlined the new measures, which feature an increased presence of marked patrol cars and uniformed officers. The plan also entails covert operations that support visible patrols, leveraging every asset from drones to the mall’s comprehensive security camera setup.
Officers specializing in community outreach have been tasked with identifying potential criminal hotspots and addressing threats posed by juveniles, supported by school resource officers. A captain has been specifically appointed to lead these efforts, underlining the high priority law enforcement has placed on curtailing crime in the area.
Community leaders, while appreciative of the intensified security measures, continue to advocate for long-term solutions that address the root causes of youth violence in Howard County. Town hall meetings and forums have been scheduled to foster dialogue between residents, law enforcement, and local government representatives to collaboratively seek sustainable peace and safety strategies.
