JACKSON, Miss. — A woman implicated in a harrowing abduction case involving two children from Louisiana—one of whom was later found deceased in Mississippi—has been indicted by a Hinds County Grand Jury. Victoria Cox, 32, faces charges of capital murder, kidnapping, and sexual bettary linked to the grim discovery.
The case extends across state lines, affecting communities in both Mississippi and Louisiana. Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell has disclosed that both Cox and Daniel Callihan, 36, are to be tried in the jurisdictions of both states. This cross-state legal approach underscores the gravity and complexity of the case which began with the tragic death of 35-year-old Callie Brunett in Loranger, Louisiana, also allegedly at the hands of Callihan.
According to the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner Rick Foster, Callie Brunett succumbed to multiple sharp force injuries that included stab wounds to vital areas and defensive injuries on her arms—hallmarks of a violent confrontation. Her body was found within her locked mobile home, discovered by her devastated father who initiated a search after she was reported missing.
Amid the tragic adult fatality, the situation escalated with the abduction of Brunett’s two daughters which triggered an Amber Alert. The alert culminated in Mississippi, where the body of 3-year-old Erin Brunett was found in a secluded wooded area, the autopsy revealing asphyxiation as the cause of death. Her sister, 6-year-old Jalie Brunett, survived and was found in time to receive medical treatment in Jackson.
The Jackson Police, led by Chief Joseph Wade, indicated that they were investigating potential links to human trafficking at the site where Erin was found—as evidenced by items like small animal cages. The complexity of the crime scene led local authorities to involve multiple agencies, including the Human Trafficking Divisions of both the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Hinds County.
Further chilling details emerged as police processed the crime scene extensively over three days, pointing to a meticulously executed crime with potential broader implications. The involvement of both Cox and Callihan in such grave allegations necessitated a strong inter-state collaborative effort in law enforcement and legal prosecution.
The subsequent arrest of both suspects in Jackson shed light on the sequence of events, with Callihan allegedly implicating Cox during their capture. Cox and Callihan are dealing with multiple charges in Mississippi, including capital murder and sexual battery. Louisiana legal proceedings mirrored the severity, as Callihan faces charges of first-degree murder among other allegations. Cox’s legal entanglements in Louisiana include charges ranging from accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.
The repercussions extend beyond immediate legal considerations, sparking discussions among lawmakers and community advocates about the effectiveness and speed of Amber Alerts in similar abduction scenarios.
To aid ongoing investigations and facilitate community cooperation, authorities have set up dedicated tip lines inviting the public to contribute any information that could assist in unravelling the full scope of this tragic case and ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
