HOUSTON – A tragic incident early Saturday morning claimed the lives of two recent graduates from Florida A&M University, Ronnie Burns II and Jayden Fleming. Both 22 years old and fraternity brothers at Kappa Alpha Psi, the men were attending festivities for the Texas Greek Picnic when their lives were abruptly cut short by a suspected drunk driver.
The fatal crash occurred around 2 a.m. when a black Ford pickup, driven by 21-year-old Rene Hernandez, allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Smith and Elgin. According to Precinct 7 Constable James Phillips, deputies had previously witnessed Hernandez’s vehicle hitting multiple cars as it fled the scene. Officers attempted to halt the reckless driver, but Hernandez continued until colliding with a white Lexus that Burns and Fleming were in, resulting in a fiery wreck that left no survivors in their vehicle.
Constable Phillips expressed his concerns about the dangers of impaired driving, urging young people to seek alternative transportation methods. “When Mr. Hernandez left that bar, I’m sure he didn’t think he’d be involved in taking two lives,” Phillips said. “It’s critical for our community, especially the youth, to understand the consequences and make responsible choices.”
In the wake of this devastating loss, Keanu Capers, the Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi at FAMU, described the profound impact on both the fraternity and the broader community. “Having to speak to the families and see how everyone is affected is incredibly difficult,” Capers stated. “These individuals touched many lives, and their absence leaves a significant void.”
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Burns and Fleming’s families during this difficult time. Friends and fraternity members have gathered to honor their memory and share stories about the joy and camaraderie the graduates brought to their lives.
Meanwhile, Hernandez, who suffered injuries in the crash and underwent surgery, remains in custody and faces murder charges. After his recovery, he is expected to be transferred to the Harris County Jail. A female passenger in his vehicle reportedly experienced only minor injuries.
The weekend that was meant for celebration and cultural engagement for Burns and Fleming has turned into a somber reminder of the peril posed by drinking and driving. As their loved ones mourn, calls for awareness and responsibility regarding alcohol consumption are growing louder within the community.
