Tragic Explosion in Iron River Home Claims the Life of New Elderly Resident

Iron River, Michigan – Deputies from the Iron County Sheriff’s Department and troopers from the Michigan State Police, Iron Mountain Post, responded to an explosion at 820 Cayuga St. in the City of Iron River around 9:30 pm CST on 2/10/24. Upon arrival, they found the residence mostly destroyed, with debris scattered as far as three blocks away. Fire departments from Iron and Dickinson Counties were called to the scene to search for potential victims, along with MSP K9 units and the 8th District MSP Fire Investigator.

Unfortunately, there was one confirmed fatality, an 80-year-old male who had recently moved into the home from Florida. Despite no suspicion of criminal activity, the fire remains under investigation. The Iron River City Police is leading this investigation with assistance from the MSP Fire Investigator.
