LaGrange, Ga. — A tragic dog attack that claimed the life of local resident Theresa Patterson has left the community in shock as police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The attack occurred on Friday morning when authorities received reports of a violent encounter involving two large dogs.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after 11 a.m. to find Patterson being attacked by an XL Bully and a Cane Corso. Witnesses described the chaos as the scene unfolded. While the Cane Corso managed to flee, the XL Bully continued the assault. A responding officer made the difficult decision to fatally dispatch the aggressive dog in an effort to save Patterson.
The Cane Corso was later captured and is now being held at the LaGrange Animal Shelter. Authorities have indicated that while this dog is considered dangerous, the owner still retains certain rights, complicating the investigation. Lt. Clay Bryant emphasized the importance of a thorough review process to determine the dog’s potential for danger. The department is still in the early stages of interviewing witnesses and examining evidence to ascertain the roles of both animals.
In the weeks ahead, investigators will also be examining the actions of the dog’s owner. “We are actively interviewing the owners to understand how the dogs came to be outside that day,” Bryant said. He revealed that the dogs are typically housed indoors, leading detectives to question the events leading up to the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, potential charges against the owners remain uncertain. Police officials have stressed the importance of a thorough examination of all factors involved before making any determinations. “It’s still early in the process, and we want to ensure that we have a complete picture before drawing any conclusions,” Bryant added.
The community is now grappling with the aftermath of the attack while awaiting more information. Local residents have expressed their condolences and concerns, highlighting the growing need for stricter regulations regarding dog ownership in the area. As the police investigation continues, many are hoping that lessons will be learned to prevent future tragedies.
