Tragic Chicago Woman Killed by Ex-Boyfriend in Front of Children Despite Protective Order

A Chicago woman was fatally shot in front of her two children just hours before her ex-boyfriend was set to be served with an extended protection order. The tragic incident occurred in the Austin neighborhood of the city on December 13, as 34-year-old Maria Roque was shot multiple times. This devastating act unfolded in front of her 14-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter.

The suspect, identified as Kenneth Brown, 44, is now charged with murder. The shooting took place as Roque was putting her daughter into a rental car and noticed Brown approaching. Despite Roque’s attempt to flee, Brown shot her multiple times, resulting in her tragic death.

The violent behavior of the suspect had escalated after Roque ended their relationship weeks earlier. A protective order had already been issued against Brown, but tragically, it was unsuccessful in protecting Roque. Brown had violated the order prior to the fatal shooting.

Brown was arrested on December 29 and charged with first-degree murder. According to reports, he made his first court appearance on Sunday and was ordered to remain in custody without bond. His next scheduled court appearance is set for Wednesday.

The tragic incident has resonated with the community, prompting many to come forward in support of Roque and her family. A GoFundMe page has raised nearly $15,000 to cover the costs of Roque’s funeral. Additionally, Alexandra Jundt, who organized the fundraiser, described Roque as a courageous mother who had been taking brave steps to escape a dangerous domestic situation in hopes of providing safety and peace for herself and her children.

The senseless act of violence has left the community in shock, and as Roque’s loved ones mourn her tragic loss, they are also advocating for greater support and protection for victims of domestic violence. This devastating incident serves as a reminder of the urgent need for effective measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future, and to ensure the safety of those affected by domestic violence.
