FALL RIVER, Mass. — A tragic fire at an assisted living facility claimed the lives of nine individuals Sunday night, leaving the community in shock as rescuers battled the blaze and sought to aid those trapped inside.
Fire department officials confirmed the fatalities early Monday, noting that 30 others were injured in the incident. Eyewitness accounts painted a harrowing scene as flames engulfed the facility, with residents desperately seeking help from windows.
“The teams arrived to a chaotic situation, with significant fire visible and many needing immediate assistance,” Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon reported at a press conference outside the Gabriel House. Firefighters faced challenges as they worked to secure the safety of residents, with multiple individuals attempting to escape through windows.
While the extent of injuries to the residents remains unclear, five firefighters were transported to a local hospital suffering from what were described as mainly minor injuries. Gabriel House has provided care since its establishment in 1999, housing approximately 70 residents in its three-story, 100-unit facility at the time of the fire. State health officials are currently engaged in an inquiry to determine the cause of the devastating blaze.
Assisted living facilities in the state are mandated to maintain adequate staffing levels to respond effectively to emergencies, as indicated by the Executive Office of Aging & Independence. Gabriel House emphasized its commitment to round-the-clock staffing on its website.
