ATLANTA, Ga. — A mother in Georgia is facing serious charges, including two counts of murder, in the death of her 11-year-old daughter. Authorities say Shannen Grimes, 42, allegedly took her child’s life before attempting to take her own.
The tragic incident unfolded at the Laurel Grove Condominiums on Saturday morning, following a welfare check request from a family member who expressed concern for Grimes. Sandy Springs police responded to the call and found Grimes on the couch, bleeding from wrist injuries. Her daughter, Genesis, was discovered lifeless in a nearby recliner, covered with a blanket.
According to investigators, Grimes’ sister alerted police after Grimes disclosed her suicide attempt. Upon entering the condo, officers were met with a harrowing scene. Genesis had suffered multiple stab wounds to her neck and shoulder, leading authorities to immediately suspect foul play.
Sandy Springs Police Sgt. Leon Millholland described the situation as devastating, remarking on the deep impact this tragedy has had on the family and the community. “It’s tough for the family, the community, and even for the officers who had to confront this heartbreaking situation,” he said.
Warrants reveal disturbing details uncovered at the scene. Blood was found throughout the residence, including in the kitchen and bathroom, along with various knives that appeared to have been recently used. Items such as blood-stained clothes were also discovered, suggesting a desperate attempt to clean the scene.
Grimes’ injuries and subsequent hospital treatment prompted further interrogation. During her transport to the hospital, she reportedly admitted to stabbing her daughter in the neck. Following her release from medical care, she was booked on multiple charges—two counts of murder, first-degree cruelty to children, and evidence tampering.
Neighbors reported that they had not previously heard any disturbances from the unit and that there had been no prior calls to law enforcement or social services regarding the family. According to police, all doors to the condo were locked, and there were no signs of forced entry, complicating the investigation’s initial findings.
