BEND, Ore. — Authorities confirmed on Monday that a second body was recovered following a tragic accident at Dillon Falls on the Deschutes River, as search efforts persisted for one individual still missing. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office reported the discovery early in the day, marking a somber turn in an incident that claimed the lives of two women, while a man remains unaccounted for.
The distressing event unfolded on Saturday afternoon when a group of rivergoers was swept over the waterfalls, located approximately 10 miles from Bend. While divers worked tirelessly, one person was pronounced dead at the scene and three others were rescued from the turbulent waters. Jason Carr, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, elaborated on the extensive search operations that included divers, boats, drones, and specially trained dogs.
Carr highlighted the challenges of survival in the frigid waters, explaining that the falls create a dangerous cascade extending well beyond the initial drop. “The whitewater continues for quite a stretch, making it far from a simple drop,” he said. “The cold and the rocky conditions make survival very unlikely.” Calculating the peril involved, he noted that those who survived likely did not go over the falls due to the severe dangers associated.
As investigations continue, detectives are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding how the group ended up in the treacherous waters. Carr remarked that it seems likely those rescued didn’t traverse the falls, emphasizing the improbability of surviving such a fall.
The body recovered on Monday was located downstream from the falls. Details regarding the types of flotation devices the group had used remain unclear. However, Carr mentioned that typical practices for visitors suggest exiting the river at the day-use area before reaching the hazardous waterfall, where warning signs are prominently displayed.
The three survivors sustained minor injuries, including scrapes and bruises, but were capable of exiting the rescue boats independently. They were subsequently transported to a local hospital for further evaluation, ensuring no additional injuries were overlooked.
Authorities have yet to release the identities of those involved in the incident, as they work closely with families during this difficult time.
The Deschutes River is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, especially during the summer months, offering activities like rafting, tubing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Nevertheless, officials stress the importance of recognizing and adhering to safety measures at such locations, particularly as treacherous waters pose significant risks.
