The footage could provide new evidence about a confrontation in which three officers shot a woman who police said never fired at them.
HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police expect to release body-worn camera footage within 30 days as investigators review a Sunday encounter in which three officers shot an armed woman accused of repeatedly shooting a man at a northwest Houston apartment complex.
The planned release is expected to provide the clearest public record yet of the officers’ confrontation with the woman in the 5900 block of Pinemont Drive. Police said she did not fire at officers, correcting initial information suggesting there had been an exchange of gunfire between the woman and police.
Officers were dispatched at about 11:15 a.m. after receiving a report that a woman had shot a man at the apartment complex, police said. Authorities said the woman then walked away. Before officers arrived, they received another report that she had returned to the man and shot him again.
When officers reached the area, they found the woman walking outside near a sidewalk, according to police. Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir said officers issued verbal commands that she did not follow. Three officers opened fire, with Bashir saying they feared for their safety during the encounter.
Police said officers moved toward the woman after the gunfire and began providing medical attention. Authorities said they found two pistols in her possession. The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition, as was the man police accused her of shooting. No officers were injured.
The sequence described by police leaves several important questions unresolved, including what actions officers saw immediately before they opened fire and how the weapons found with the woman were positioned or handled during the confrontation. Police have not publicly provided those details.
Authorities also have not released the identities of the woman or the wounded man. Police initially described the man as the woman’s partner, but Bashir later said investigators had not confirmed a relationship between them. No motive for the original shooting has been announced.
The updated police account also differs from information released earlier in the response, when authorities initially indicated the woman had fired at officers. Police later said she did not shoot at them. The department has maintained that the three officers fired because they believed their safety was threatened after the woman did not comply with their commands.
The investigation remains open, and police have not announced charges or final findings. The forthcoming body-camera footage is expected to document at least part of the officers’ encounter, while investigators continue reviewing the original shooting and the police use of force.
