Three Flee After Man Is Killed In Gage Park Fight

The victim was identified as Nelson N. Urrutia, 35, of Addison.

CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago detectives were investigating a fatal shooting in Gage Park after a man was killed during a confrontation Saturday night in the 2900 block of West 54th Street, police said.

The victim, identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as Nelson N. Urrutia, was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot multiple times. Police said the confrontation began when a dark-colored sedan stopped near him shortly before 9 p.m.

According to police, Urrutia was walking when three people got out of the sedan and approached him. An argument followed, then a fight. During that encounter, one person opened fire, striking Urrutia several times. The three people then fled westbound on West 54th Street in the same vehicle, police said.

Authorities have not said what the dispute was about. Police also have not released the names of any suspects, a detailed description of the shooter or the other two people, or a license plate connected to the sedan. No arrests had been reported in the days after the killing.

The shooting happened near 54th Street and Francisco Avenue, a Southwest Side area made up largely of residential blocks. The timing, just before 9 p.m. Saturday, placed the shooting in a neighborhood setting where investigators may look for doorbell cameras, street cameras and witnesses who saw the vehicle before or after the attack.

Area One detectives were assigned to the case. Their next steps could include reviewing video from the block, checking nearby traffic cameras and matching witness accounts with physical evidence collected at the scene. Police have not said whether a weapon was recovered.

The medical examiner’s identification clarified the victim’s name and age after initial police reports described him as 32. Urrutia was 35 and from Addison, a village west of Chicago. Officials have not released funeral information or additional details about his family.

The investigation remained active Tuesday, May 5. Police had not announced charges, and the three people who fled in the dark-colored sedan had not been publicly identified.
