Oakland, Maine — A Thanksgiving Day explosion, linked to a propane leak inside a home, has left one man seriously injured and raised concerns in the community. State officials announced on Friday that the blast, which obliterated a residence on Lakeview Drive, likely resulted from a gas leak finding an ignition source.
Sixty-six-year-old Cliff Hannon, who is the president of the Waterville Sunrise Rotary Club, was critically hurt in the incident. He is currently receiving treatment for severe injuries at Maine Medical Center, where his condition remains closely monitored.
Witnesses living nearby described the moment the explosion occurred. Shawn Marquis, a longtime friend of Hannon, reported hearing a loud blast from his home approximately a mile away. “It was a horrendous noise that I’ll never forget,” he recalled.
Samantha Gray, a neighbor who experienced the shockwave firsthand, shared her frightening experience. “The explosion felt like a huge blow to my chest. I saw debris, insulation, and shrapnel everywhere. It was unlike anything I’ve ever encountered,” she remarked.
Immediately after the explosion, residents in the area sprang into action, rushing to assist Hannon before emergency services arrived. Gray expressed her appreciation for the tight-knit nature of the community. “This neighborhood is amazing; everyone is always ready to help each other out,” she said.
Hannon is well-known locally for his kindness and generosity. “He’s the type of person who lights up a room. Always cracking jokes and making people feel at ease,” noted Marquis, underscoring the profound sense of loss felt within the community.
Gray echoed those sentiments, describing Hannon as a wonderful neighbor who frequently offered his support. “You can always count on him. He and his wife are truly thoughtful people, always sending Christmas cards and dropping by for a chat.”
Fire investigators are currently analyzing various propane appliances in the damaged home as they work to uncover what may have triggered the explosion. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise from gas leaks in residential areas, prompting officials to urge homeowners to remain vigilant about appliance safety.
As the community rallies around Hannon and his family during this difficult time, local residents are coming together to provide support and encouragement.
