Reports say an elderly woman had withdrawn 4,000 rupees shortly before a juvenile allegedly tried to take her bag.
CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR, India — An elderly woman’s trip home after withdrawing pension money became the focus of widespread attention after surveillance video showed her holding onto a bag as a juvenile allegedly pulled her to the ground during an attempted robbery.
The incident was reported Oct. 26 in the Garkheda neighborhood of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. Local reports said the woman had just withdrawn 4,000 rupees from a bank and was carrying the money home when she was approached from behind.
The amount of cash became a central detail in coverage of the case because reports identified it as the woman’s pension payment. Available reporting, however, did not establish her broader financial circumstances or whether the money represented her only income. Her name, age and medical condition were not publicly confirmed in the sources reviewed.
Security-camera footage shows a youth reaching for the woman’s bag and pulling at it while she refuses to release her grip. The struggle sends her to the road, where she is pulled several feet before the youth breaks away. The recording later shows people gathering around the woman.
The footage spread rapidly on social media, where the woman’s resistance drew widespread reaction. Some posts gave her heroic labels and portrayed the confrontation as a symbol of an older person’s determination to protect essential income. Those reactions went beyond what the surveillance footage itself could establish about her circumstances.
Reports also contained inconsistencies about whether the bag or money was ultimately taken. Several accounts said the woman successfully held onto the bag and the youth fled without it, while other reports described the pension money as having been stolen. The more detailed accounts reviewed described the incident as an attempted snatching and said the woman continued holding the bag.
The suspect was later caught and handed to Jawaharnagar police, according to the Free Press Journal. The newspaper identified Shekhar Jadhav, a district Yuva Sena official, and other residents as the people who pursued the youth. Reuters Connect said separate reporting attributed the apprehension more generally to local residents and did not independently confirm Jadhav’s role.
Early reporting also left the legal status of the case unsettled. Reuters Connect said police had confirmed that the footage came from Garkheda but that no formal complaint had been registered at the time of one Oct. 26 report. Later accounts said the juvenile had been handed to police, but no verified charging information or court proceeding was available.
The video provides a clear record of the physical struggle, but it does not resolve all of the claims that circulated afterward. As of the latest reports reviewed, authorities had not publicly released the woman’s identity, a detailed injury report or a final account of what action would be taken in the juvenile case.
