Taraba First Lady Calls for Justice After Violent Attack on Teenager Stirs Outrage

Donga, Nigeria — The wife of Taraba State Governor, Angyin Kefas, has denounced the violent assault on a 17-year-old girl in Donga Local Government Area, branding the act as a troubling violation of the rights of a minor. The condemnation follows the recent arraignment of Ramatu Abbas, the woman accused of attacking the girl, who is now held at the Wukari Correctional Centre awaiting trial.

In a statement addressed to the public, the First Lady emphasized that children should never endure abuse or intimidation under any circumstances. She described the incident as “deeply disturbing” and a serious infringement on human rights. In her insistence on accountability, Angyin Kefas urged law enforcement and child protection agencies to prioritize the safety of both the victim and her guardian while pursuing justice.

On the same day, the Donga Magistrate’s Court made a ruling that Abbas be remanded in custody as public outrage over the alleged attack continues to mount. Reports indicate that following the incident, Abbas’s husband chose to divorce her, expressing his disapproval of her actions, which he deemed embarrassing and unacceptable. This divorce was conducted in accordance with Islamic customs.

Initial reports suggest that the victim, Iwasen Terhemba, was assaulted after she refused advances from Mr. Abbas, the suspect’s husband. Community sources reveal that Terhemba, who resides with her guardian Jemila Wanga, insisted on her underage status and the marital status of the man, which reportedly led to escalating tensions.

It was alleged that following a failed attempt to discuss the situation with Abbas, the guardian found herself in a precarious position as the suspect launched a physical attack on Terhemba, inflicting visible injuries. Furthermore, concerns were raised about threats allegedly directed at both Terhemba and her guardian to discourage them from reporting the incident.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from various sectors, including the Taraba State Government through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development. Commissioner Mary Sinjen reiterated that such acts against minors are unacceptable and emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring justice. The ministry confirmed it was working closely with security agencies to address the situation comprehensively.

Governor Agbu Kefas has reportedly directed that efforts to support the victim be intensified. Medical, psychosocial, and legal assistance are being coordinated, highlighting a strong governmental response aimed at safeguarding vulnerable individuals within the community and preventing future incidents.

The emotional and societal repercussions of the attack resonate far beyond the individuals involved, prompting renewed calls for heightened protection for minors and a commitment to uphold their rights across the state.
