Surveillance Video Captures Terrifying Liberty City Street Shootout

Police say a handgun and rifle were fired during the Sunday confrontation, which left one man critically wounded and led to an arrest.

MIAMI, Fla. — Surveillance video captured a burst of gunfire on a Liberty City street as bystanders scrambled away from an armed confrontation that left one man critically wounded and another facing attempted murder and firearms-related charges, according to Miami police and an arrest report.

The shooting happened shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, near Northwest 15th Avenue and Northwest 68th Street. The video provides a close view of a confrontation that police said involved two armed men and multiple rounds fired in a public area. Officers responding to the scene found spent shell casings, damaged vehicles and a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.

The footage shows one man crossing the street while holding a handgun. Another armed man appears on a sidewalk and begins firing, according to police and published descriptions of the video. People nearby can be seen running from the area as the shooting continues. The circumstances that led to the encounter have not been fully explained by authorities.

Investigators said the man firing from the sidewalk moved behind a white Subaru before opening a door and retrieving a rifle. Police said he then continued firing as the other man ran along Northwest 68th Street. The armed man with the rifle followed him while continuing to shoot, according to the arrest report.

Miami police responded after receiving a ShotSpotter alert shortly after 5 p.m. Officers found multiple spent casings at the scene as well as vehicles that had been struck by gunfire. The wounded man was found nearby with a handgun close to him, according to the arrest report. Miami Fire Rescue took him to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

Police later identified the arrested man as 33-year-old Micah Lendale Tilley of Opa-locka. Authorities said Tilley approached an officer about 15 minutes after the shooting and acknowledged his involvement while saying he had acted in self-defense. His statement remains a claim and does not establish that the shooting was legally justified.

During an interview with detectives, Tilley said he saw the other man leave a vehicle carrying a firearm, according to police. Investigators said Tilley acknowledged firing two different weapons, a handgun and a rifle, but told detectives he could not remember which one he used first.

Police arrested Tilley on charges that include attempted murder, use of a firearm while committing a felony, unlawful discharge of a firearm, improper exhibition of a firearm and criminal solicitation. The charges are accusations, and the court process will determine whether prosecutors can prove them.

The identity and current medical status of the wounded man had not been officially confirmed in the latest information reviewed. Family members told NBC 6 South Florida that the man was Gerald Williams and that he later died, but authorities had not publicly confirmed that account. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not announced a final determination about what prompted the confrontation.
