ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. — A 20-year-old man has been charged with multiple offenses following a violent confrontation at a local eatery, Amigo Street Tacos, which has rattled the suburban Detroit community. The altercation, which culminated in a viral video, showcases the risks small business owners face, sparking discussions on safety and crime prevention in the area.
Daveon Jahmel Godbold of Eastpointe was apprehended shortly after the incident during a traffic stop and is now facing charges including unarmed robbery, resisting arrest, malicious destruction of property, aggravated assault, and illegal drug activities. Authorities booked him into the Macomb County Jail.
The dispute reportedly began over a restroom that was out of order, leading to a heated exchange at the establishment on Saturday evening. According to the restaurant’s owner, Jose Perez, 45, the confrontation escalated after he refused to hand over a food order to Godbold, who was picking it up for DoorDash.
“The toilet was disconnected from the water supply, and he still used it. When he tried to collect the food order, I confronted him about his actions in the restroom,” Perez recounted. Tempers flared when the food was subsequently thrown on the floor, and the situation turned violent.
Surveillance footage captured the distressing moments that followed. Godbold, after the initial encounter, allegedly returned with an accomplice, and together they launched a physical assault on Perez. During the altercation, one of the assailants kicked a window of the restaurant, adding to the property damage.
In the wake of the attack, Perez, who also owns five other locations in metro Detroit, reported suffering several injuries. “Saturday was really bad,” he said, describing swelling in his head, back pain, and knee injuries.
Local authorities have intensified their search for the second suspect involved in the assault as community members rally around Perez and his business. The local response underscores the solidarity among business owners in the region, highlighting the importance of community support in the face of criminal acts.
Police urge anyone with information related to the case to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation and ensure accountability for the culprits.
This incident has prompted a broader discussion about the safety and security of local entrepreneurs, stressing the need for preventive measures to protect them from similar threats. Community leaders and business associations have begun dialogues on enhancing security protocols and fostering a safer business environment to prevent future occurrences.
As the case progresses, the community remains hopeful for justice and recovery, reflecting on the essential role local businesses like Amigo Street Tacos play in the fabric of St. Clair Shores.
