Six shot, one dead after trail ride gathering in Houston

Police say gunfire erupted behind a Homestead Road strip center as officers worked to break up a large crowd.

HOUSTON, Texas — A Saturday night gathering tied to a trail ride turned deadly when an altercation behind a northeast Houston strip center escalated into gunfire, leaving one person dead and five others wounded as police tried to disperse a crowd along Homestead Road around 8 p.m.

Houston police said hundreds had converged in the 11300 block of Homestead Road near Guadalupe Street when multiple callers requested traffic control and officers moved in to clear the parking lots. Investigators said a fight broke out behind the businesses and several people began shooting. Six people were struck by bullets; a 20-year-old man later died, while a 15-year-old boy and four others ranging from 16 to 22 years old were treated at hospitals. Detectives believe more than one gun was fired and have not announced arrests. The homicide division is leading the case and is reviewing surveillance video gathered from nearby storefronts and witnesses.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene with riders on horseback and people running for cover as shots rang out. “When I came through here, it was blocked,” neighborhood resident Arthur Stewart said, recalling barricades on nearby streets after the shooting. Family members identified the man who died as 24-year-old Cory Young Jr. and called the violence “senseless,” adding that he had left home shortly before the gunfire. Employees at Big City Foods said they had called for help as crowds pressed against windows and doors and reported that similar gatherings have flared in the area before. Houston Fire Department medics took three victims to hospitals; three others arrived on their own, police said.

The crowd had formed ahead of a planned trail ride, part of a regional tradition that routinely draws riders, horses, all-terrain vehicles and spectators to parking lots and roadside pull-offs on weekends. Police said they were already in the area responding to traffic complaints from business owners when shots were fired. Investigators are gathering precise counts of attendees and reviewing camera footage from multiple angles, including surveillance shared by nearby stores. Detectives have not said how many shooters were involved, what started the fight, or whether any weapons were recovered at the scene. Officers processed the lot for more than 12 hours, marking casings and mapping trajectories in search of a clear sequence of events.

City officials said the case remains open and urged anyone with video or firsthand accounts to contact homicide detectives. No suspect descriptions were publicly available by Sunday evening, and police did not disclose whether they had identified vehicles that sped away after the gunfire. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death and confirm the man’s identity. Detectives are working to interview hospitalized victims as their conditions allow and to obtain warrants for additional video sources from nearby properties. Police said updates will be provided as soon as investigators can verify facts and timelines.

Saturday’s violence follows repeated complaints from businesses along Homestead Road about crowd control tied to weekend rides. While many events pass without serious incidents, neighbors said the parking-lot gatherings can overwhelm the strip centers and spill into surrounding streets. Employees at local shops told reporters that they have phoned authorities in the past when large groups arrived and that some storefronts now monitor cameras remotely on busy nights. The latest shooting has renewed questions about how trail ride meetups are organized, who is responsible for security in private lots, and whether special event permits or earlier police presence might help reduce risk.

As of late Sunday, police had not announced suspects or arrests, and investigators were seeking more witness accounts. Detectives plan to review ballistic evidence and compare it against databases to determine whether weapons used Saturday have been tied to other crimes. Funeral arrangements for the man who was killed were not immediately available. Police said any additional briefings would be scheduled after key interviews are completed and lab work is returned.
