Mackay, Australia – A serene neighborhood typically occupied by retirees was abruptly disturbed by tragedy Wednesday afternoon when a young woman was fatally shot in her car while her two young daughters, aged 11 and 12, sat in the back seat. The incident occurred in the Robb Place cul-de-sac, a normally quiet area lined with low-set brick homes.
Robb Place is part of a larger community located south of Mackay’s city center, known for its proximity to the gateway to the Whitsundays, a region famed for its scenic vistas and as a stopover along the Bruce Highway.
The victim, identified as Natalie Frahm, 34, had moved to the neighborhood approximately two years prior with her partner, who works as a fly-in-fly-out worker in the nearby mines. Friends indicated that the family had settled into their new home around the previous Christmas.
Natalie was preparing to take her children to an afterschool activity on the afternoon of the shooting. Witnesses reported that her neighbor, Ryan Geoffrey Cole, approached the vehicle and fired into it, hitting Natalie. The children were unharmed physically and managed to escape to a nearby house for help.
An area resident, James McGill, 66, was visiting his mother when he heard the commotion and rushed to assist, only to be shot himself. He was hospitalized with injuries to his hand and sternum and remains in stable condition at Mackay Base Hospital.
Police responded quickly to the scene, securing the area and launching an immediate manhunt for Cole, who fled before they arrived. He was later apprehended without incident at a service station along the Bruce Highway. Cole, who celebrated his 31st birthday on the day of the attack, has been charged with murder and attempted murder.
Investigations by local law enforcement are ongoing, with detectives scouring the neighborhood and using metal detectors to search for additional evidence. A revolver-style weapon, believed to be used in the shooting, has yet to be located.
