DES MOINES, Iowa – Multiple fatalities have been confirmed by the Iowa State Patrol following a tornado and a wave of severe storms on Tuesday, which also resulted in numerous injuries. The Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla stated in a press conference on Tuesday evening that while there were confirmed fatalities, the total number is still being determined.
The powerful storms that swept through the Midwest produced multiple tornadoes, one of which wreaked havoc on the small town of Greenfield, Iowa. The tornado, with a population of around 2,000 and located approximately 55 miles southwest of Des Moines, left a trail of destruction in its path, demolishing homes, businesses, trees, and vehicles, and scattering debris far and wide.
Residents of Greenfield were left to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of the storm, with the town bearing the scars of devastation. The landscape was littered with debris from destroyed buildings, uprooted trees, and damaged vehicles. Despite the destruction, residents came together to support each other and salvage whatever belongings they could.
Rogue Paxton, a resident who sought shelter in his basement during the storm, recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing the destruction around him. He expressed gratitude for his family’s safety but acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead for the community in the aftermath of the disaster.
The storm also inflicted damage on wind turbines in southwest Iowa, with several 250-foot turbines reportedly being toppled by a tornado. This raised concerns about the resilience of wind farms in the face of severe weather conditions.
The Adair County Health System hospital in Greenfield sustained damage during the storm, prompting officials to assess the extent of the destruction. Mercy One, the hospital’s affiliated organization, dispatched personnel to evaluate the situation and provide assistance as needed.
As the storms continued to ravage the region, the National Weather Service issued multiple tornado warnings for areas surrounding Griswold, Corning, Fontanelle, and Guthrie Center. The state of Iowa had been on high alert for severe weather following forecasts predicting strong tornadoes and thunderstorms.
