Second Suspect Arrested in SoHo Shooting Death of 16-Year-Old Boy

New York City, New York – Police authorities announced the arrest of a second suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy who was attempting to intervene in a fight in a SoHo courtyard. The incident occurred last month in Manhattan.

The teenage victim, Mahki Brown, was tragically killed on May 7 in the Urban Plaza courtyard, located across from 233 Spring St. in SoHo. The shooting took place around 2:30 p.m. when Brown, trying to break up a dispute between two groups of teenage girls, was struck in the head and leg. The suspect, Henry Thomas, 19, allegedly opened fire during the altercation.

Authorities reported that the suspect and Thomas arrived at the courtyard on a CitiBike and fled the scene on the same bike after the shooting. Thomas was previously taken into custody in May and charged with murder in connection to Brown’s death.

The victim, a student at Broome Street Academy Charter High School, was described as a peacemaker who willingly stepped in to help during conflicts. It was revealed that Brown was not the intended target of the violent incident that unfolded in the presence of approximately 30 individuals.

The second suspect, who is also 16 years old, was apprehended in Newark and faces charges of second-degree murder. Following his arrest, the suspect was arraigned in Supreme Court and is currently being held without bail under the jurisdiction of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

Police Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny expressed remorse for the loss of Brown and emphasized his heroic character. The investigation into the shooting continues as authorities work to ensure justice for the victim and his loved ones.
