Sea Turtle Meat Consumption Triggers Tragic Fatalities in Zanzibar Island

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – Tragedy struck in Zanzibar as several individuals suffered fatal consequences after consuming sea turtle meat on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago. The incident resulted in the deaths of eight children and one adult, with an additional 78 individuals being hospitalized. Sea turtle meat is considered a delicacy among the people of Zanzibar, leading to the unfortunate outbreak of chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning.

The devastating turn of events saw the passing of the adult, who was the mother of one of the children affected by the consumption of turtle meat. This incident occurred on Tuesday, according to Dr. Haji Bakari, the medical officer of the Mkoani District.
