Sea Turtle Meat Consumption Leads to Tragic Deaths on Zanzibar Island

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – A tragedy struck Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago as several people fell ill or lost their lives after consuming sea turtle meat over the weekend. The incident led to the death of eight children and one adult, with 78 others being hospitalized. Sea turtle meat is considered a delicacy among the people of Zanzibar, though consuming it resulted in a fatal case of chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning.

The Mkoani District medical officer, Dr. Haji Bakari, revealed that the adult victim who passed away late Friday was the mother of one of the deceased children. All victims had eaten sea turtle meat on Tuesday, and laboratory tests confirmed their consumption of it. This tragedy mirrors a similar event in November 2021 when seven individuals, including a 3-year-old child, died on Pemba Island after ingesting turtle meat, which also left three others hospitalized.

Authorities in Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania, mobilized a disaster management team headed by Hamza Hassan Juma to address the situation and advised the public to refrain from eating sea turtles.
