Residents of Realty Tower in Youngstown Seek Answers After Deadly Gas Explosion

Youngstown, Ohio – Following a tragic explosion at the Realty Tower that claimed one life and injured several individuals, residents are left displaced and concerned for their safety and future.

Tracey Winbush, a resident of the tower, expressed her frustrations about the gas-related issues that had been reported to building management prior to the explosion. The incident, which resulted in the death of Chase Bank employee Akil Drake, has raised questions about the integrity of the building’s infrastructure.

During a news briefing, a National Transportation Safety Board member highlighted the presence of an abandoned gas line that was pressurized with natural gas, leading to the explosion. The investigation is focused on determining the cause of the gas release and subsequent blast, with a particular interest in potential third-party involvement.

Enbridge Gas of Ohio, the area’s gas service provider, played a crucial role in addressing the gas line issue alongside local authorities and firefighters. The NTSB team, led by investigator Kim West, is conducting a thorough examination of the incident to understand the factors that contributed to the explosion.

The NTSB team’s focus includes assessing gas line failure, emergency response procedures, and human performance in handling such emergencies. While the investigation is expected to last about a week, a preliminary report will be released within 30 days, with final reports anticipated in 12 to 24 months.

In the aftermath of the explosion, community support and aid have been extended to both the victims and first responders. The Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley partnered with Covelli Enterprises to provide meals for those involved in the rescue efforts.

As investigations continue, residents like Reniro Jackson, Charles Cook, and William Mayberry are grappling with the aftermath of the explosion and the uncertainty of returning to their homes in the tower. Councilwoman Samantha Turner is working with local authorities to provide support and assistance to affected residents.

Despite the challenges ahead, the community remains resilient and united in its support for those impacted by the tragic events at the Realty Tower. The road to recovery may be long, but with shared efforts and resources, healing and rebuilding can begin.
