Republican Caucus Sites Moved After Tragic School Shooting in Perry, Iowa

Perry, Iowa is still reeling from the devastating loss of a student and the principal of Perry High School, who were killed when a gunman opened fire on January 4. As the Iowa caucus approached, the Dallas County Republicans made the decision to move caucus sites out of Perry High School. The caucus was relocated to Perry Elementary School by Raymond Knapp, a member of the Dallas County GOP committee, out of respect for the community.

Knapp expressed the profound impact of the tragedy, stating, “There’s a lot of people and it’s hard to imagine how many feelings it brings up of people who didn’t even have children in the school at the time.” The community continues to grapple with the emotional aftermath of the shooting.

Perry High School principal Dan Marburger tragically succumbed to his injuries ten days after the shooting, leaving behind a devastated community. The shooting also claimed the life of Ahmir Jolliff, 11, and left many others injured. The shooter, identified as Dylan Butler, 17, ultimately took his own life.

The heroic actions of principal Dan Marburger did not go unnoticed. The Uvalde Foundation For Kids, a national nonprofit organization, had announced the establishment of an emergency fund to assist with Marburger’s medical bills, recognizing him for his selfless efforts to protect his students.

Reports indicate that Butler had planned to cause further harm, but the shooting occurred before the school day had commenced, preventing a potentially more catastrophic outcome.
