PRAGUE, Czech Republic – In the wake of a tragic mass shooting that claimed the lives of 14 people at the Faculty of Arts last month, Charles University in Prague is taking steps to enhance security measures across its buildings. The university’s rector, Milena Králíčková, announced that a comprehensive list of security measures will be prepared for individual faculties, tailored to their specific needs.
The university’s crisis meeting also addressed plans to return academic life to the Faculty of Arts building on Jan Palach Square, where the shooting took place. The activities scheduled as part of the ‘Month for the Faculty’ event are aimed at restoring a sense of normalcy to the university community. Additionally, plans for the upcoming summer semester at the Faculty of Arts were discussed, with the assurance that classes will be held in alternative venues and even online, offering flexibility for students and faculty.
Security measures, such as card access, were among the topics of discussion, as the university sought ways to enhance safety on its premises. Furthermore, plans for a commemorative procession, called the Transmission of Light, were also on the agenda. This procession, involving students carrying light from the rector’s office to the Faculty building, symbolizes their desire to embrace the building in the wake of the tragedy.
In coordination with the commemorative procession, the university is organizing a candlelit tribute to honor the memory of the victims. The rector emphasized the sensitivity and significance of this event, which is set to take place on January 4th. Students, staff, and faculty are coming together to support one another and honor the lives lost in the tragic incident.
