Parents Charged After 3-Month-Old Found With 20 Fractured Ribs

Both defendants face felony charges and are scheduled to return to court Nov. 19 after an investigation involving their 3-month-old child.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Two parents accused in a Guilford County child abuse investigation remain held on separate $100,000 secured bonds as their cases move toward a Nov. 19 court appearance, according to the latest information released by authorities.

Deiza Rodriguez, 29, and Kiano Leroi Evans, 24, each face one count of felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. They were arrested Oct. 2 after an investigation involving their 3-month-old child, who authorities said was found during medical evaluation to have multiple fractures. Both defendants are being held at the Greensboro Detention Center.

The case began publicly with a hospital visit. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office said detectives with the Major Crimes Investigative Unit opened an investigation Sept. 5 after Rodriguez and Evans brought their child to a local hospital for evaluation of a head injury. Medical staff later determined that the infant had suffered additional fractures, authorities said.

Charging documents allege that the child suffered 20 fractured ribs and a skull fracture. The documents also allege that the injuries resulted from a willful act showing reckless disregard for human life. Authorities have not released further details describing how the injuries allegedly occurred or specifying what evidence investigators relied on in seeking charges against both parents.

A separate report based on arrest warrants listed June 8 as the date of the alleged offense and said the child was three months old at that time. The warrant was issued Oct. 1, according to that reporting, one day before Rodriguez and Evans were taken into custody.

Early coverage of the arrests contained different information about bond. An Oct. 5 report said the defendants had been denied bond. Updated information released afterward said each defendant was being held under a $100,000 secured bond. The newer bond information was reported by multiple outlets citing the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.

The two defendants are scheduled for their next court appearance Nov. 19 at 9 a.m. Authorities have not announced any additional charges, and no publicly released information reviewed for this report indicates that either defendant has entered a plea or that the allegations have been adjudicated.

The charge against each parent remains an allegation. Court proceedings will determine whether prosecutors can prove the accusations. Law enforcement has not released information about the child’s current condition beyond the injuries described during the investigation.

The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing. No additional information about the circumstances surrounding the injuries or further investigative findings had been released as of Thursday.
