Outbreak in Zanzibar: Fatalities Linked to Sea Turtle Meat Consumption

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – Several individuals tragically lost their lives or fell ill after consuming sea turtle meat on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago, authorities revealed over the weekend. Eight children and an adult perished from the tainted meat, while 78 others were hospitalized. The consumption of sea turtle meat is highly regarded as a delicacy in Zanzibar, leading to these devastating outcomes due to chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning.

Dr. Haji Bakari, the medical officer for the Mkoani District, confirmed that all victims tested positive for ingesting sea turtle meat. The tragic incident linked to the consumption of turtle meat occurred on a Tuesday, resulting in the loss of a parent and their child.

In response to the crisis, a disaster management team was deployed by authorities in Zanzibar, urging citizens to refrain from consuming this dangerous delicacy. This is not the first time such a tragedy has occurred on Pemba Island, with a similar incident resulting in seven deaths and several hospitalizations in November of 2021.
