Ohio Homeowner Causes Explosion Mixing Pool Chemicals: 5 Hospitalized

Eastlake, Ohio – A homeowner in Eastlake, Ohio caused an explosion that shook the neighborhood and resulted in five people being hospitalized due to a chlorine mishap while mixing pool chemicals on Thursday evening.

The Eastlake Fire Department swiftly responded to a chlorine explosion report inside a residence around 6:15 p.m., as reported by Fire Chief Theodore H. Whittington. Upon arrival, officials encountered a chaotic scene with a family member outside using a garden hose to assist those exposed to the chemical.

In the aftermath of the blast, it was revealed that 11 individuals were inside the home during the incident. Two minors were rushed to Rainbow Babies and Children in Cleveland, while one adult was taken to University Hospital’s main campus, and two other adults were transported to University Hospital in Willoughby, all displaying symptoms of difficulty breathing and burning eyes and skin, with their conditions remaining undisclosed.

Although six individuals were treated onsite without needing hospitalization, the Lake County Haz Mat Team conducted a thorough search of the premises to ensure safety and clear the area of any potential hazards.

Authorities determined that the explosion was caused by a severe chemical reaction while the homeowner was preparing to use chlorine for the family’s pool, generating a significant release of chlorine gas that affected those indoors, prompting precautionary air monitoring.

The Red Cross and various neighboring cities extended their assistance to the affected residents, emphasizing the collaborative efforts in the response to the incident. This event comes within close proximity to a previous explosion in Youngstown, raising concerns about safety protocols and chemical handling practices among homeowners.
