Officer Injured in Fatal Shooting at Pineville Apartment Complex

PINEVILLE, N.C. – A police officer in Pineville, North Carolina sustained injuries during a recent officer-involved shooting incident that resulted in the fatal shooting of at least one suspect. The incident took place at an apartment complex on Johnston Road after authorities received a 911 call regarding a shoplifting incident at a nearby Food Lion store.

The confrontation began when an off-duty police sergeant in uniform attempted to apprehend the suspect at the store, leading to a physical altercation and subsequent foot chase to the apartment complex. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots during the encounter, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

After a second physical altercation at the apartment complex, the sergeant discharged his weapon, fatally shooting the suspect. Although the police sergeant sustained injuries during the incident, he was not shot.

Former Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer and attorney Walter Bowers emphasized the importance of prioritizing police duties over store policies when conflicts arise while officers are engaged in secondary employment. These officers are sworn to uphold law enforcement responsibilities at all times, even during off-duty assignments.

Captain Corey Copley urged the community to keep all involved parties in their thoughts and prayers during a press conference held at the Food Lion following the incident. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department will be spearheading the homicide investigation, as they were not initially involved in the call that led to the fatal shooting.

The incident serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face in the line of duty, even during routine interactions. The community is left grappling with the aftermath of the tragic event, emphasizing the importance of supporting and recognizing the sacrifices made by those who protect and serve.
