Navy Veteran Killed in Walmart Parking Lot Gunfire

Investigators say 81-year-old James Edward McDaniel was not involved in the dispute that sent gunfire across the crowded parking lot.

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Police are searching for those responsible for gunfire that killed an 81-year-old bystander outside a Walmart in Gainesville, where investigators say shots were fired across a busy parking lot as shoppers and vehicles moved through the area.

James Edward McDaniel of Lula was struck shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the parking lot of the Walmart at 400 Shallowford Road NW. Gainesville police have said their preliminary investigation indicates McDaniel was an innocent bystander and was not part of the confrontation that led to the shooting. He died from his injuries.

Police have not announced an arrest or publicly identified a suspect. Investigators also have not released a motive or explained what caused the dispute. The unanswered questions have become a central focus of the investigation as detectives work to determine who fired weapons and who witnessed the shooting.

Gainesville Police Capt. Kevin Holbrook told local reporters that a number of people were in the parking lot at the time and that investigators were working to determine which people were witnesses and which could be persons of interest. Police have described a scene in which individuals were firing at one another with numerous shoppers and vehicles nearby.

McDaniel was leaving the store and heading toward his vehicle on a motorized shopping cart when he was struck, according to local reporting based on police and family accounts. Authorities have given no indication that he had any connection to the people involved in the gunfire.

Emergency crews responded after reports of shots fired and transported McDaniel in critical condition. Authorities closed the immediate area while investigators examined the parking lot. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation assisted Gainesville police with processing what authorities described as a large crime scene.

The investigation continued Thursday as police appealed for information from people who were at the store or might know who was involved. No suspect description had been publicly released, and authorities had not said how many people fired weapons or how many firearms were involved.

The shooting occurred outside a major retail store during evening hours, creating a broad pool of potential witnesses for detectives to identify and interview. Investigators have not publicly detailed what surveillance footage, physical evidence or other records they may have obtained as part of the inquiry.

McDaniel’s death shifted the case from an investigation into a critically injured shooting victim to a fatal shooting inquiry. Police have continued to characterize him as an uninvolved bystander, while the circumstances that brought the armed individuals to the parking lot remain under investigation.

Gainesville police are continuing to seek information about the shooting, and no arrests had been announced as of Friday. The department has said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to identify those responsible and establish the sequence of events that led to McDaniel’s death.
