Mystery Deepens After Series of Boat Explosions at New Jersey Marina, Injuring Two Firefighters

KEYPORT, N.J. — Authorities are investigating a boat explosion that occurred on Monday at a marina in Keyport, New Jersey, which led to a fire spreading to two additional boats docked nearby. The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, and state police were dispatched to address the blaze by 3:10 p.m. at the Brown Point Marina.

According to initial reports by the State Police, the fire originated from a vessel for reasons yet to be determined. The flames, fueled by strong winds, quickly spread to two other nearby vessels, all of which were unoccupied at the time. The investigation into the cause is ongoing, and officials have not yet identified any suspicious factors involved.

Responding to the emergency, the Keyport Volunteer Fire Department played a pivotal role in managing the situation. Unfortunately, two firefighters sustained injuries during the operation. One of them received treatment at the scene, while the other was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries but was later released.

The fire resulted in the total destruction of all three boats, being declared a complete loss. Additionally, there was minor damage reported to the pier. The scene was declared clear by approximately 6:30 p.m.

This recent incident marks the second explosion at a marina in the area this summer. Previously, on August 28, a 32-foot motorboat exploded in the Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge at Raritan Marina just after being fueled with 75 gallons of gasoline. The cause of that explosion was also not determined.

Local marina owners expressed shock and concern over the explosions but confirmed that they do not believe the incidents are connected. They reassured boat owners that safety remains a top priority and preventative measures are routinely assessed to mitigate risks.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson reiterated that while the investigation continues, there is currently no evidence to suggest foul play. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Meanwhile, the community and local boat owners await conclusive results that may help prevent future occurrences.

In light of these events, residents and visitors to marinas are urged to adhere to all safety regulations and guidelines to ensure their safety and the safety of others around watercraft. Incidents such as these serve as stark reminders of the potential hazards associated with boating and the importance of stringent safety practices.
