Multiple Injured, Including Children, in Detroit Suburb Splash Pad Shooting

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – A great afternoon turned tragic as a gunman opened fire at a splash pad in a Detroit suburb, injuring nine individuals, including two young children and their mother. The incident occurred at a city park where families had gathered to enjoy the summer heat. Law enforcement identified a suspect who later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his residence.

During a news conference, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard reported that an 8-year-old boy sustained critical injuries to his head, while his mother was also in critical condition with wounds to her abdomen and leg. The boy’s 4-year-old brother suffered a leg wound but was in stable condition. Despite initial reports of 10 gunshot victims, authorities later confirmed six individuals were injured, with everyone aged 30 or older currently in stable condition.

The shooting took place around 5 p.m. at a recreational area with a water spray feature, where the shooter approached the splash pad and fired multiple rounds while reloading. Witnesses mentioned the use of two handguns during the assault, which law enforcement has yet to verify. The chaotic scene left many fleeing in fear as the shooter calmly returned to his vehicle after the attack.

Responding promptly, officers arrived within minutes of the 911 call, administering crucial aid and swiftly locating the suspect’s residence. Despite attempts to establish contact, the suspect was found deceased inside the home. Further investigation revealed another firearm, potentially preventing additional harm from occurring. The motive behind the gunman’s actions remains unknown, as officials continue their inquiries.

In the aftermath, recovered weapons included handguns, empty magazines, and spent shell casings at the splash pad, while a semiautomatic rifle and handgun were seized from the suspect’s home. The community remains in shock, with Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett expressing his devastation at the violation of a place meant for joy and gatherings. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragile nature of life.
