Orillia, Ontario — In the wake of a brutal assault that left a young man fighting for his life, a mother is urging city officials and law enforcement to enhance public safety and hold the assailants accountable. Holly Hodgson, the mother of 24-year-old Jordan Duffy, expressed her anguish over the incident that unfolded at Couchiching Beach Park and the emotional aftermath endured by her family.
Duffy’s life was irreversibly changed on May 26, when he was attacked after intervening on behalf of a young girl he saw being assaulted near the Rotary Aqua Theatre. A widely circulated video showed a group of youths surrounding him, culminating in a violent beating that left him seriously injured. Hodgson recounted her son’s harrowing ordeal, emphasizing the effort he made to defend someone in distress.
“No one should have to suffer like this for just doing the right thing,” Hodgson stated, highlighting the significant toll the incident has taken on her son’s physical and mental well-being. Since the assault, Duffy has endured severe injuries, including deep lacerations to his head and significant trauma to his knee, which now requires him to use crutches and wear a leg brace.
Hodgson believes her son’s survival owes much to Chris Landra, a local resident who rushed to assist Duffy during the attack. Landra, who was preparing to paddleboard when he saw youths fleeing the scene, performed first aid while waiting for emergency responders. “I just did what anyone should do when they see someone suffering. You don’t walk away,” he said, stressing the need for greater awareness and training in emergency response among local youth.
City officials, including Mayor Don McIsaac, have condemned the violence and are working on measures to improve safety in the community. McIsaac expressed his dismay upon viewing the video of the incident, stating, “This is not who we are as Orillians. We all need to do better.” He mentioned ongoing discussions with law enforcement about enhancing patrols and increasing surveillance in public areas.
Despite these efforts, Hodgson voiced her frustration regarding communication from the police, noting that she only learned of arrests related to the incident through social media. She has provided evidence to authorities, but feels that more should be done to ensure accountability and justice for her son.
As Duffy recovers, the emotional toll on his family is palpable. His two younger brothers are also grappling with the trauma from the event, leaving the family in a state of fear and insecurity. “It used to feel safe on our streets,” Hodgson lamented. “Now, I’m afraid every time someone walks past.”

City council members have initiated fundraising to help him recover the lost funds, emphasizing the importance of community solidarity during difficult times.
Landra believes that the emphasis on safety and emergency preparedness must extend beyond this incident. “We have to equip our youth to handle emergencies better,” he said, reinforcing the idea that everyone bears responsibility for the welfare of the community.
