Manhunt Ends in Jail for Convicted Homophobic Attacker

London, United Kingdom – A man involved in a violent homophobic attack in Islington has been apprehended and sentenced to jail after a widespread search led by Met officers. Alex Ogden, aged 28, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm and faced sentencing at Snaresbrook Crown Court following his admission of guilt. The incident took place on October 18, 2023, where Ogden assaulted a man in his 50s with a knife, inflicting cuts to his face and a broken nose while verbally abusing him with homophobic slurs before fleeing.

The Central North Public Protection Team initiated an investigation, leading to a nationwide search for Ogden in collaboration with police forces across the country. After forensic evidence linked Ogden to the crime scene, he was eventually tracked down and arrested in Southwark on November 2. Detective Chief Inspector Paul Ridley commended his team’s efforts in securing a conviction against Ogden, citing his extensive criminal record and history of targeting multiple victims in various regions, particularly in the north of England and on trains.

During the court proceedings, it was disclosed that Ogden had 39 prior convictions, prompting the court to sentence him to 32 months in prison along with a five-year restraining order to protect the victim. The severity of the attack warranted the case being treated as a hate crime, emphasizing the Metropolitan Police’s dedication to combatting hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. Ridley urged other potential victims to come forward and report any instances of hate crimes to prevent further harm.

Ogden’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to address hate crimes and protect vulnerable communities from discriminatory attacks. The swift action taken by law enforcement in identifying and apprehending the offender highlights the importance of public cooperation and vigilance in combating such despicable acts of violence. Moving forward, authorities remain committed to upholding justice and ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or identity.
