Man with Violent Past Receives Nine-Year Sentence for Brutal Attack on Woman in Spain

Marbella, Spain – Jason McInerney, a 36-year-old with family ties to Co Laois, has admitted to a brutal assault that left a woman with significant injuries, including friction burns, spinal fractures, and a stab wound in her leg. The assault occurred over several days in July 2023 and has led to a recent nine-year prison sentence for McInerney in the UK, following a conviction in a Spanish court.

McInerney, who had been released from prison just over a year prior to the assault, had a history of violent behavior, including serving 15 years for involvement in a shooting at a wedding in the UK. His violent tendencies were further demonstrated when he escaped custody during a court hearing after biting a detective’s nose, embarking on a five-month spree of further criminal activities before his capture.

The recent conviction in the UK came after a coordinated effort between British and Spanish law enforcement, enabling the trial to proceed in the UK. This international legal collaboration underscores the seriousness with which authorities are addressing cases of violence against women, regardless of where the crimes occur.

During the ordeal in Spain, the woman attempted to seek help by alerting staff at a pharmacy to her plight. It was shortly thereafter that McInerney stabbed her in the leg and, in an attempt to escape, she jumped from McInerney’s moving car. Despite being severely injured, she managed to evade further harm and alerted a passerby who assisted her in reaching safety at a nearby beach bar where police were summoned.

According to the Crown Prosecution Service, the prosecution was able to present a compelling case that included video surveillance from the pharmacy and the beach club, detailed medical reports on the victim’s injuries, and her harrowing account of the events.

The impact of the assault was profound, leaving the victim stranded abroad without her passport. Her return to the UK required intervention from the British Consulate in Malaga. Upon her return, she was immediately hospitalized due to the severity of her injuries, which were detailed by Hertfordshire police upon her arrival.

The evidence gathered by law enforcement from both Spain and the UK was pivotal in securing McInerney’s conviction. Charles White from the Crown Prosecution Service highlighted the extended and violent nature of the assault and praised the swift actions of international law enforcement in bringing McInerney to justice.

Detective Inspector Samantha Alcock, from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Domestic Abuse Investigation Support Unit, remarked on the dangerousness of McInerney, emphasizing the importance of the international cooperation that led to his capture and conviction. She expressed hope that the lengthy sentence would serve as a deterrent to similar crimes and a reassurance to the community about the seriousness with which such offenses are treated.

This case highlights not only the cruelty of the individual perpetrator but also the challenges and complexities of addressing cross-border crimes. The successful resolution of this case is a testament to the effectiveness of international legal cooperation in ensuring justice for victims of such harrowing circumstances.
