New Westminster, British Columbia – A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a violent assault on a SkyTrain attendant at the Braid SkyTrain station. The incident took place on July 5, 2021, when the suspect attacked the attendant, causing bodily harm and forcibly confining her.
The Metro Vancouver Transit Police revealed that the victim, a SkyTrain attendant, managed to fight off the attacker and escape to safety while calling for help during the harrowing ordeal. The suspect was apprehended at the scene by Transit Police officers and has been in custody until his recent court date on May 2, 2024.
It was reported that Howard Geddes Skelding, 29, was found guilty of one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of forcible confinement, leading to his 10-year prison sentence. The Transit Police commended the courage and strength displayed by the SkyTrain attendant for bravely facing her attacker in court and enduring such a traumatic incident.
Const. Amanda Steed of the Transit Police highlighted the physical injuries sustained by the victim during the assault, including a laceration and various soft tissue injuries. However, it was noted that the victim is receiving support from various sources, including Victim Services, her employer (BC Rapid Transit), the General Investigation Unit, and her family to aid in her emotional recovery.
