MIDDLE TOWNSHIP, N.J. — New Jersey authorities are investigating the fatal police shooting of a 37-year-old man during an encounter Friday morning near a busy shopping area in Cape May County, while key details about what led officers to use deadly force remain undisclosed.
Andre Moore was shot around 10:30 a.m. near Route 9 and Satt Boulevard in the Rio Grande section of Middle Township. The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting. Authorities have not publicly detailed the sequence of events leading to the gunfire or identified the officer or officers who fired.
The shooting brought a large law enforcement response to the commercial area near a Walmart Supercenter. A vehicle at the center of the scene was surrounded by investigators as officers closed roads and diverted traffic. Authorities said the scene was secured and there was no continuing threat to the public.
The Attorney General’s Office handles investigations of deaths that occur during encounters with law enforcement in New Jersey. The independent review is required under state law when a person dies during an encounter with an officer acting in an official capacity or while a person is in custody. The results of such an investigation are presented to a grand jury for consideration.
The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office initially released limited information about the shooting and said the Attorney General’s Office had taken responsibility for the investigation. Video from news helicopters showed a heavy police presence around a dark-colored car in the roadway. The intersection remained blocked for hours as investigators collected evidence. Authorities have not publicly explained why police encountered Moore, what happened immediately before shots were fired or whether investigators recovered a weapon.
Family members identified Moore to Action News and described him as a father of six. His relatives said he had been experiencing mental health difficulties in recent months and that they had tried to get him help. Those accounts provide family context about Moore but do not establish what occurred during his encounter with police Friday.
Family members also told Action News that Moore’s girlfriend was in the vehicle and was injured. A medical helicopter was requested during the emergency response, but authorities had not released a detailed official account of the woman’s condition or explained how she was injured.
The Attorney General’s Office investigation remains active. Officials had not released a detailed timeline of the encounter, the identities of the officers involved or an account explaining what prompted the use of deadly force as of Saturday.
