Man Jailed After Violent Outburst at Morrisons Supermarket on Isle of Wight

NEWPORT, Isle of Wight – A man in Morrisons supermarket on the Isle of Wight became violent with staff and a customer, resulting in his arrest and subsequent imprisonment by magistrates.

The incident took place at the Morrisons supermarket in Newport on February 7, where Steven Yeo of Ryde, admitted to assaulting the store manager, a security guard, and a customer. Yeo also faced charges of shoplifting, possessing a knuckleduster, and possession of cannabis.

Police were called to the scene at 7:40 pm, where they found Yeo being restrained by shoppers after attacking the store manager and punching a member of the public. Yeo continued to resist arrest, prompting officers to use Pava spray. During a search, police found knuckledusters and cannabis in his possession.

Yeo’s defense attorney, Oscar Vincent, cited his client’s mental health issues and recent breakup as contributing factors to his behavior that day. Yeo, who had managed to stay sober for 14 months, had previously breached a suspended jail term and now faced 12 weeks in prison, along with a fine and compensation to his two victims.

Vincent highlighted the impact of Yeo’s mental breakdown and lapse back into drinking, emphasizing the need for support and understanding for individuals dealing with such issues.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges individuals with mental health issues face and the importance of providing proper support and resources for those in need. It also underscores the significance of addressing the underlying issues that contribute to such behavior, rather than simply focusing on punitive measures.

The sentencing of Yeo reflects the consequences of such actions, but also raises questions about the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in addressing the complex needs of individuals dealing with mental health challenges.
