Man Indicted for Arson and Murder After Binghamton Fire Claims Life of Veteran Firefighter

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — A Broome County Grand Jury has indicted a local man on charges of arson and murder following a deadly fire in Binghamton last month, which resulted in the tragic death of a firefighter. The suspect, 36-year-old Patrick K. Shea, was arrested on March 13 after police investigations revealed the fire at a vacant downtown building was intentionally set.

The February 12 blaze claimed the life of John Gaudet, a 40-year-old firefighter who had served with the Binghamton Fire Department for over a decade. While battling the flames in the Main Street building, Gaudet was fatally injured when a wall collapsed, trapping him beneath the rubble. He later succumbed to his injuries at Wilson Hospital.

Following the incident, investigators conducted numerous interviews and reviewed extensive surveillance footage, which ultimately led to Shea’s arrest. The ongoing investigation remains a top priority for local authorities, and the Binghamton Police Department asserts its deep commitment to justice, not just in this case, but in all cases of property destruction and endangerment of lives.

Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski expressed profound condolences and continued support for the bereaved family and colleagues of John Gaudet. “The loss of John has deeply affected all of us. Our officers have dedicated countless hours to this investigation to ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” Zikuski stated.

The community and fellow firefighters from surrounding areas, including the Syracuse Fire Department, have expressed their sympathy and support to the Binghamton Fire Department during this difficult time. The incident has also ignited discussions on firefighter safety and the dangers inherent in dealing with fires in structurally compromised buildings.

As the prosecution moves forward, the Binghamton Police Department reassures the community and Gaudet’s family that every possible step is being taken to ensure a thorough and just legal process. Meanwhile, the law enforcement community and local residents continue to mourn the loss of a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

This case also stands as a poignant reminder of the risks firefighters take every day to protect and serve their communities. Their bravery and the sacrifices made by first responders are being remembered and honored amid ongoing investigations and the pursuit of justice.
