Man Indicted for 2022 Shooting Death of Birmingham Father in Front of Infant Son

Birmingham, Alabama – A 21-year-old suspect, Andrew Ardrecus Bonner, has been indicted on two counts of capital murder for the shooting death of 33-year-old Jesse Dewayne Cummings Sr. in front of his infant son in November 2022.

The grand jury issued the warrants for Bonner in January, and he has been held without bond since his arrest on November 7, 2022. One of the capital murder counts is because the victim was in a vehicle when he was killed, and the other is because Cummings was killed in front of his child. The shooting occurred near 45th Place North and Eighth Court North, just across the street from where a children’s birthday party was taking place.

Cummings was found unresponsive inside a vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Thankfully, his infant son was unharmed during the incident. The preliminary investigation indicated that the shooting stemmed from a domestic altercation, and the city’s gunfire detection system, Shot Spotter, detected more than 20 shots fired.

Bonner’s court date has not yet been scheduled, as he remains in custody at Jefferson County Jail. The tragic incident has left the community in shock, as those involved in the shooting did not appear to be affiliated with the large birthday gathering across the street. The indictment and ongoing legal proceedings serve as a reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence within communities.
