Police have released few details about the unidentified man’s death as Area Five detectives work to establish what happened.
CHICAGO — Chicago police are trying to determine how an unidentified man died after officers found him with extensive burns and head injuries near a Portage Park car dealership shortly after midnight Tuesday.
The discovery in the 5300 block of West Irving Park Road has left several central questions unanswered. Police have not released the man’s name, said what happened before he was found or identified anyone suspected of involvement in his death.
Officers responded to the area about 12:10 a.m. near City Volkswagen, according to police. The man had burns across his body as well as injuries to his head. Authorities initially reported that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators also recovered suspected accelerant and lighter fluid near the body, according to reports citing police and law enforcement sources. Officials have not publicly said whether those materials are believed to have been used in the incident or whether they belonged to anyone connected to the man.
Authorities had not announced an arrest or released a description of any potential suspect Tuesday morning. Police also had not said whether detectives had obtained surveillance footage, identified witnesses or established a timeline beyond the time officers responded.
The man’s identity remained one of the most significant unknowns. No age or other identifying information had been released, and authorities had not publicly described how long he may have been at the location before police were called.
Police have likewise stopped short of publicly explaining the cause or manner of death. Those determinations generally depend on findings from the medical examiner as well as evidence gathered by detectives. No official medical examiner findings had been announced Tuesday morning.
The investigation is being handled by Area Five detectives, who cover portions of Chicago’s North and Northwest sides. Police have not announced any charges or provided a motive, and the circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain under investigation.
