Man Critically Wounded In Safeway Lot; Woman Found Dead

Police said the woman linked to the shooting was later found dead.

PEORIA, Ariz. — A man was critically injured Friday after a shooting in a grocery store parking lot in north Peoria, where police said witnesses reported hearing a loud pop shortly before officers arrived.

Peoria police said officers responded about 11:15 a.m. to the Safeway parking lot near Vistancia Boulevard and El Mirage Road. The man was found inside or near an SUV with at least one gunshot wound to his upper torso.

Peoria Fire-Medical crews took him to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition. Police said an adult woman involved in the shooting left before officers arrived. A short time later, she was found at another location dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Detectives said the man and woman knew each other, but police had not released their names or described the relationship as of Saturday. Investigators called the case isolated and said they were still working to determine what happened before the gunfire.

Video from the scene showed police activity around a Toyota SUV attached to a U-Haul trailer in the parking lot. The shooting brought officers and emergency crews to a busy commercial area in north Peoria during late-morning shopping hours.

No charges had been announced because the woman identified by police was dead. Detectives continued gathering witness statements, reviewing evidence from the vehicle and working to confirm the sequence of events.

The investigation remained active Saturday. Police had not released the man’s updated condition or a final report on the woman’s death.
