Jersey City, NJ – Authorities in Jersey City have arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal shooting that took place in the city. Joseph Del Valle, a 36-year-old resident of Hoboken, has been taken into custody for his alleged involvement in the incident that resulted in the death of Christoph Terrero Marte, 33, and the injury of two other individuals. Del Valle is facing charges of murder for Marte’s death, as well as two counts of aggravated assault related to the wounded victims.
Another individual, Francisco Salcedo, 42, has also been arrested in connection with the shooting. Salcedo, a Jersey City resident, is facing a charge of aggravated assault. The shooting occurred early in the morning on March 9 in Jersey City’s McGinley Square neighborhood, prompting a police response. Despite initial reports of shots fired, all three victims were already on their way to Jersey City Medical Center when officers arrived at the scene.
Marte, a Jersey City resident, succumbed to his injuries at the medical center, while the two wounded victims, a 31-year-old Jersey City man and a 28-year-old Union City man, are expected to recover from their injuries. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting or the evidence that led to the arrests of Del Valle and Salcedo. Del Valle has been placed in Hudson County jail following his arrest, awaiting his first court appearance.
The death of Marte marks the first homicide in Jersey City for the year 2024, following a significant drop in homicides the previous year. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop commended the city’s progress in reducing crime rates, aiming for further reductions in criminal activities. The decrease in murders in nearby New York City from the previous year also reflects a positive trend towards improved public safety in the region.
