Man Arrested for Murder of Wife and Toddler in Plantation, Facing Death Penalty or Life in Prison

Plantation, Florida – A tragic incident unfolded in Broward County as a man was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife and toddler following an apparent drug overdose. Jean Carlos Aponte, 40, is now behind bars as authorities investigate the deaths of his 38-year-old wife Sara Ashley Gama and 2-year-old son Ethan Aponte in their Plantation home.

According to the arrest report, Aponte is accused of stabbing his son four times and his wife 28 times, with both victims displaying defensive wounds. The cause of Ethan’s death was determined to be sharp force injury and drowning, while Sara’s cause of death was attributed to sharp force injury. The heartbreaking scene was discovered with Ethan found face down in the pool and Sara on the kitchen floor.

A makeshift memorial now stands outside the Plantation home in honor of the victims. Police were initially alerted to the situation when conducting a welfare check and found the mother and child deceased inside the residence. Aponte was also found unconscious at the scene due to a suspected drug overdose and was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Facing two counts of first-degree murder and premeditated murder, Aponte could potentially be sentenced to the death penalty or life in prison if convicted. In light of his suicide attempt, a judge has mandated a mental health evaluation for Aponte. He appeared in court and is currently being detained without bond.
