Man Arrested After Homemade Firework Causes Evacuation at Southern California Shopping Center

TUSTIN, Calif. – A man was taken into custody on Tuesday for allegedly igniting a homemade firework near a shopping center in Southern California, according to the police.

The incident took place at The Village at Tustin Legacy, prompting the evacuation of several businesses. There were no injuries or damages reported. The spokesperson for Regency Centers, Eric Davidson, confirmed the evacuation and stated that the businesses affected included Chipotle.

Tustin Police Lt. Matt Nunley disclosed that a 30-year-old man was detained after a witness observed smoke and someone walking away from the scene. The man was cited for three misdemeanor health and safety code violations related to the firework, and was then released.

Authorities described the firework as tube-shaped and possibly resembling a pipe bomb, but believe it to be an isolated incident. Both the Orange County Fire Authority and the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office responded to the scene, as is routine for reported explosions.

The shopping center includes various establishments such as restaurants, salons, and gyms. Tustin, located more than 30 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, is a community known for its bustling commerce.

As the investigation continues, the police are working to ensure the safety and security of the area. It is crucial for law enforcement to thoroughly examine and address any potential threats to public safety in the community.
