Man and Woman Charged with Serious Bodily Injury in Connection to Twin Infants’ Death

Houston, Texas – A man and woman, both 21 years old, are facing charges related to the tragic death of twin infants in October 2023. Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega have been charged with two counts of injury to a child-serious bodily injury, according to court documents.

The Houston Police Department responded to a home on Linden Creek Lane after receiving reports of two infants, identified as Massail and Mirena Vega, found unresponsive. The infants, who were born prematurely, were discovered by their father, Vega, in their crib. Despite efforts to perform CPR, the twins did not survive.

Authorities revealed that the infants, only five weeks old, were found with discolored skin, multiple bruises, and one child had multiple fractures. An autopsy determined that their deaths were a result of multiple injuries caused by a blunt object.

Investigations also uncovered that the twins had not received necessary check-ups since being released from the hospital. Calderon mentioned to the police that the children were sick but medical care was not sought.

Calderon and Vega were identified as suspects and subsequently arrested on April 19. Family members shared insights about the couple, revealing allegations of abusive behavior from Vega towards Calderon. Despite these claims, Calderon’s sister defended her, stating that she was at work when the tragic incident occurred.

Furthermore, Calderon’s aunt acknowledged the severity of the situation by emphasizing that accountability should be upheld. Police also noted that the girls were malnourished and some injuries were deemed to be days or even weeks old.

This incident has brought to light the need for proper care and vigilance towards infants, highlighting the importance of seeking medical attention when necessary. As the legal proceedings continue, the community remains shocked and saddened by this heartbreaking tragedy.
