Madison Police Clarify Misreports in School Shooting Case, Urges Public to Halt Spread of Unverified Documents

MADISON, Wis. — Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes corrected earlier reports during a Tuesday afternoon briefing, clarifying that a second-grade teacher, not a student, made the initial 911 call that alerted authorities to the tragic shooting at Abundant Life Christian School. The incident, resulting in multiple casualties including the suspected shooter, 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, has profoundly shaken the local community.

Chief Barnes also addressed concerns about a document circulating on social media possibly linked to the shooting, urging the public to cease sharing it while the source remains under investigation. The police are thoroughly examining Rupnow’s social media and electronic devices to piece together the events leading up to the violence.

The focus of the investigation is to establish a motive for the shooting, with all possibilities, including bullying, still being considered. According to Barnes, the shooting did not target any individual specifically, but was influenced by multiple factors.

In the wake of this tragedy, neighboring schools in the Madison area have been subjected to false alarms and swatting incidents. Barnes emphasized that there is no current threat to students, but confirmed that his department is collaborating with the district attorney to address these false threats sternly.

In terms of safety measures and response, it was reported that authorities responded promptly to the scene on Monday. The first 911 call was made at 10:57 a.m., with officers and emergency medical services arriving within minutes. By 11:05 a.m., the shooter was confirmed down, and a gun was recovered.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway has announced a vigil to commemorate the victims. It will be held at the Wisconsin State Capitol by the Vel R. Phillips statue at 6:00 p.m. CST. Additionally, the United Way of Dane County has initiated a fund to support the families of the victims.

Responding to the tragedy, Chief Barnes praised the city’s unity, describing the collective support as “the Madison way.” Those willing to contribute to the community’s healing can seek further information by texting HELP4ALCS to 40403.

Barnes has planned to provide more updates as investigations continue. He reiterated his commitment to uncovering the full scope of the crisis, ensuring that justice is served and that the community finds a path to recovery from this devastating event. Moreover, plans are in place to enhance school safety protocols to prevent future incidents.
