Life Sentences Handed Down for Shocking Dual Murders as Court Hears Details of Brutal Attacks Across Scotland and Liverpool

Glasgow, Scotland — A 23-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in a series of violent incidents that culminated in a brutal murder. Leon Headey, along with an accomplice, was found guilty of killing 36-year-old Ross MacGillivray in a savage attack that took place in Inverness on November 11, 2023.

During the premeditated assault, Headey and his co-defendant, Craig Hayden, restrained MacGillivray and subjected him to a relentless beating, delivering punches and kicks that inflicted devastating injuries. Following the attack, the two men attempted to conceal their crime by disposing of items related to the incident in a nearby canal. Headey pleaded guilty to the murder at the High Court in Glasgow, marking the end of a concerning pattern of violence.

Just two months prior to the murder, Headey was observed on CCTV aggressively pursuing another man in Liverpool, stabbing him multiple times with a knife in a public confrontation on September 7. Despite the daylight nature of the attack, the victim did not cooperate with police investigations, however, witnesses recounted the violent scene, describing how the victim fled, ultimately seeking help from a passing car.

Prosecutor Ian Hopkins detailed that the victim from the earlier incident sustained multiple stab wounds, leaving him in critical condition. The testimonies confirmed the severity of Headey’s actions, an alarming precursor to the eventual murder of MacGillivray.

Headey’s criminal behavior extended to an additional assault on another man in Alness, Scotland, in late October 2023. As he faced the courts, he admitted to charges of affray and possession of a weapon in the Liverpool incident, receiving a sentence of 22 months, which pales in comparison to the life sentence he would later receive for murder.

At a separate hearing in Edinburgh, Headey was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 17 years and seven months. His co-defendant, Hayden, received a similar fate, sentenced to a minimum of 17 years and two months. In a related case, Samantha MacGillivray, the estranged wife of the murder victim, faced legal consequences as well, receiving a term of one year and nine months for her attempts to obstruct justice following the crime.

Detective Inspector Richard Baird of Police Scotland emphasized the brutality of the attack, noting the unsurvivable injuries inflicted upon MacGillivray. The severity of these events highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in combating violence, and the ramifications of such incidents resonate deeply within the communities impacted by these tragic occurrences.
