Police said the 13-year-old was recovered from the water about 20 minutes after witnesses reported the jump.
LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. — A 13-year-old Lake Havasu City boy died after witnesses reported seeing him jump from London Bridge and disappear beneath the water Tuesday morning, authorities said.
The Lake Havasu City Police Department said bystanders reported the incident at about 8:52 a.m. Aug. 11. Witnesses told police the boy went underwater, briefly resurfaced and then went under again. His identity had not been publicly released as of Friday, and police said the circumstances that led to the reported jump remained under investigation.
Police officers and Lake Havasu City Fire Department personnel searched the shoreline and surrounding water after arriving at the scene. Civilian boat operators also provided vessels to assist first responders. A fire department crew member entered the water with lakeshore rescue equipment and searched underwater, according to the city’s account of the response.
The boy was located underwater at about 9:12 a.m., roughly 20 minutes after the initial report. Authorities said he was unresponsive when rescuers brought him from the water and onto a boat. Police and fire personnel immediately began lifesaving measures and advanced life support care.
Emergency crews transported the boy to Havasu Regional Medical Center in critical condition. He was later flown to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas for additional medical treatment. Lake Havasu City police said the department was notified early Aug. 12 that the boy had died from his injuries.
Sgt. Kyle Ridgway, a Lake Havasu City Police Department spokesperson, later confirmed that the boy was 13 and lived in Lake Havasu City. Police had not released his name. Authorities also had not provided further information about what happened before the reported jump or the specific injuries he suffered.
Police said the case remained an active investigation. Ridgway said additional details could not be released because doing so might compromise the investigation. No finding about what prompted the incident had been announced, and authorities had not described the death as anything beyond the circumstances reported by witnesses and documented in the emergency response.
London Bridge spans the Bridgewater Channel in Lake Havasu City, connecting the city’s mainland with an island area. The landmark was originally built across the River Thames in London before businessman and Lake Havasu City founder Robert P. McCulloch bought it for $2.4 million in 1968.
The bridge’s exterior granite blocks were dismantled, shipped to the United States and incorporated into a rebuilt structure in Arizona. The reconstructed bridge was dedicated in Lake Havasu City in 1971 and became one of the community’s best-known landmarks.
Police had announced no additional findings in the boy’s death as of Friday. The department said information would be released when it becomes available and can be appropriately disclosed while the investigation continues.
